Expectations Mobile Spa: Empowering Women One Hand At a Time July 14, 2004 • By Bibi Jarvis
I had the pleasure of "virtually" meeting Denise Hanney through another networking venue, Give N' Take. When I first learned about her business, Expectations Mobile Spa, I immediately saw it as an extremely success national franchise. What I came to love and respect about it even more, was Denise's personal mission to empower all women...regardless of economic status. There is power in something so simple as a manicure.
The beauty industry reaps billions of dollars each year from women seeking to "better" themselves. Their rationale may be for personal edification, to please a mate, to present themselves adequately in the professional arena or simply to add some spice to life. Expectations Mobile Spa has acknowledged the varied rationales and is embarking upon meeting women where they are. Ms. Hanney informed Hiyaah Power that she is using her gifts and business to uplift women whether they are the clients or part of her national sales team.
The Expectations team is expanding throughout the United States. Currently, Denise Hanney has successfully franchised her business with outlets in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and North Carolina. She recognizes that by mentoring her franchisees and their staff, wisdom is being imparted unto others which translates into continued growth for the company. Ms. Hanney also trains her team members on the importance of giving back to the community. For example, Expectations Mobile Spa will be donating services in support of Hiyaah Power and Building Families Inc.'s "Lend My Your Hand: 50 State Women's Shelter Donation Campaign."
Expectations is a multi-service company that caters to the needs of women and their families in order to promote self-esteem, self-worth and introduce the benefits of taking care of oneself through pampering. Expectations targets the following population:
- Those who cannot afford the conventional day spa prices
- Individuals who have not experienced spa services
- Those who have difficulty getting to a spa due to time schedules, lack of child care services, transportation or shut-in
- Individuals who are intimidated by the spa environment
- Those who wish to continue their education, start their own business or seek individual or group counseling as it pertains to life issues, life skills, health, etc.

Have you ever said to yourself, “I wish I could change……….…” or “If I only had larger or smaller…………..…….”? Having a negative body image affects all of us at one time or another. Unfortunately, because of low self-esteem or personal experiences, it haunts some more than others. But, even if you've learned to love your body and have come out of the “I wish” phase, mostly all women can sympathize with our girlfriends, daughters, sisters and mothers that still have to learn how to embrace, accept and love themselves. This article is for all my girlfriends who have felt the disappointment of trying on that pair of jeans that used to fit last year.

Inescapable media images of sexed-up girls and women posing as adolescents can cause psychological and even physical harm to adolescents and young women, a study in the US has warned. Back To Archives
