I Am Woman
November 20, 2004By Pam Osbey

I Am Woman

I am woman hear me roar

Hear my voice, it will carry

it will soar

Soar high in the sky for all to hear

and never ever fear...for I am contemplating...

About this life.

In this life I cannot understand

why women are paid seventy-one cents

on the dollar?

why we constantly have to be bombarded with

images of girls shaking what they momma gave

them?

why we constantly accept the negative words

that downgrade us

saying we are only beautiful if we are a female

dog?

you know that is all wrong

The images the Latina girls and black girls

I serve think this is real cool

and deep down inside we are fools

to keep savoring these funky flavors

I will not continue to savor

Because I am woman

here me roar!

Hear my voice, it will carry

it will soar

poetic and powerful vibes

and not lie about how I feel

this is the real deal!

I am woman, hear me roar

here the screech in my voice

about women that are constantly

beat down, raped, and spirits broken

all over the world

Inside my soul I feel sad that women of

color are constantly being disrespected on

all levels and we as a society never raise

our voice against violence of all types

Like a lion

I will roar

my heavy voice

will soar

I will sing for every woman

raped physically, emotionally or

domestically.

For every tear that wets a face

I will try to erase

the ignorance of our so-called morals

I will try to erase

the cultural differences of our so-called values

I will try to face

and trace through

my steps to another destiny

Because little Latina and African- American

girls are watching

they are wondering

.....why we don’t understand

.....why we are constricting ourselves

when we ask them to do something

that we don’t do ourselves.

We must use our voices

Let them carry

like Martin Luther’s voice did

way back then

We must not be accepting of

women not being economically

disadvantaged

We must use these voices

Take our bodies

March and make a difference

We must let our voices

roar, roar, until they

bleed

until they soar

until the world understands who we are

and that our voices will CARRRY!

Have you ever said to yourself, “I wish I could change……….…” or “If I only had larger or smaller…………..…….”? Having a negative body image affects all of us at one time or another. Unfortunately, because of low self-esteem or personal experiences, it haunts some more than others. But, even if you've learned to love your body and have come out of the “I wish” phase, mostly all women can sympathize with our girlfriends, daughters, sisters and mothers that still have to learn how to embrace, accept and love themselves. This article is for all my girlfriends who have felt the disappointment of trying on that pair of jeans that used to fit last year.

Inescapable media images of sexed-up girls and women posing as adolescents can cause psychological and even physical harm to adolescents and young women, a study in the US has warned.
