Background

PURPOSE:  The purpose of Hiyaah Power Girls eMentoring Program is to provide early intervention and prevention services through the mentoring relationship to 100 “High Risk” young girls in 8th to 12th grades who are at risk of educational failure, teen pregnancy, truancy and juvenile delinquency. The strategies within this 2-year plan are designed to encourage young women to dream beyond the often-confining conditions of urban life and reach out to professional women nationwide for guidance.

PROJECT SETTING AND TARGET POPULATIONS:  Hiyaah Power Girls eMentoring Program is a collaborative partnership between Hiyaah Power Inc. and I Could Be Inc., a community based organization that will also serve as the lead agency.  Both agencies focus on providing much needed resources to at risk youth through internet technology.  Developing and maintaining a virtual mentoring program also strategically aligns both agencies with national efforts to diminish the digital divide.

NEED:  Hiyaah Power Girls eMentoring Program recognizes that, although nearly 8.8 million young American women and girls need or want mentoring, only about 1.3 million are in formal, high-quality mentoring relationships. That unmet need constitutes what we call the "mentoring gap."  Hiyaah Power Girls Mentoring Program works to close that gap.

STRATEGIES: 100 high risk female youth will be paired with 100 adult female, during the pilot, and 500 participants during 2007-2008. HiyaahPower.com volunteers who will be screened and trained to provide a nurturing relationship encouraging youth to “dare to dream” by participating in program sponsored activities, academic enrichment and exposure to careers.  Expected outcomes include are improved academics, better school attendance rates and confidence in skills achieved and relationships built.   .
